E-Waste Recycling in West Auckland – Where to Actually Take It (2026)
Got a drawer of dead phones, an old laptop, or a retired flatscreen taking up space? Here's exactly where you can drop off e-waste in West Auckland – what's free, what's not, and the option that's open right now.
The short answer
Manny's Recycling takes e-waste free, 24/7, at 53A Donovan Street, Blockhouse Bay. No booking, no bins, no fees – just pull up to the stone wall beside the kerb and leave your electronics.
Need a specialised recycler with business hours? Go Recycle New Lynn is free for most electronics (no CRT TVs). EchoTech Penrose takes everything including CRT, with some fees. Both are within 15 minutes of West Auckland.
What counts as e-waste?
Anything with a plug, a battery, or a circuit board. In practice, that means:
- Laptops and desktop computers (including towers)
- Monitors and flatscreens (LCD, LED, plasma)
- CRT monitors and old tube TVs
- Phones, tablets, and e-readers
- Printers, scanners, and fax machines
- Keyboards, mice, cables, and chargers
- Modems, routers, and networking gear
- Hard drives, USBs, and storage devices
- Small appliances (toasters, kettles, microwaves)
- Gaming consoles and entertainment units
Kerbside recycling bins don't take any of this. Dumping it in landfill is illegal in New Zealand under the Waste Minimisation Act. You need a proper drop-off point – and you've got options.
Option 1: Manny's Recycling (Blockhouse Bay) – Free, 24/7
Address: 53A Donovan Street, Blockhouse Bay, Auckland 0600
Hours: Open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Unstaffed – just pull up.
Cost: Free. Always.
How it works
Drive to 53A Donovan Street. You'll see a stone wall beside the kerb – that's the drop-off point. Place your electronics (and any other household recyclables) beside the wall and drive away. No bins, no sorting, no paperwork, no questions.
Volunteers sort everything later and deliver it to the right recycling facilities. If it's recyclable, we take it – including all the e-waste categories listed above.
What we take (e-waste)
Laptops, desktops, monitors, flatscreens, phones, tablets, printers, keyboards, mice, cables, chargers, modems, routers, hard drives, small appliances, gaming consoles – if it plugs in or runs on a battery, drop it off.
Note on data: We don't offer certified data destruction. If you're dropping off a computer or hard drive with sensitive information, wipe it yourself first (or take it to EchoTech – they offer secure destruction).
Best for: Anyone in Blockhouse Bay, Avondale, New Lynn, Green Bay, Lynfield, and the surrounding suburbs who wants a free, no-hassle drop-off that fits around their schedule.
Option 2: Go Recycle (New Lynn) – Free, Business Hours
Address: 32 Portage Road, New Lynn, Auckland
Hours: Business hours (check gorecycle.co.nz for current times)
Cost: Free for most electronics. CRT monitors may incur a charge. CRT TVs are not accepted at all.
What they take
Go Recycle accepts most electronic waste at no charge if you drop it to their New Lynn depot:
- Computers (towers, laptops)
- Computer accessories (keyboards, mice, cables)
- Computer parts and components
- Modems, routers, networking gear
- Cellphones and mobile devices
- Flat screens (LCD and LED monitors/TVs)
What they don't take
- CRT TVs – not accepted at all (the old heavy box-style televisions)
- CRT computer monitors – may be accepted but can incur a charge
Go Recycle strips all equipment for parts and materials recycling. They state that all data from computers and hard drives is destroyed in the stripping process.
Best for: West Aucklanders with standard electronics (no CRTs) who can visit during business hours. It's free and only a few minutes from Blockhouse Bay.
Option 3: EchoTech (Penrose) – Professional, Some Fees
Address: 5 Southpark Place, Penrose, Auckland
Hours: Monday–Friday 8:30am–5:00pm, Saturday 8:30am–3:00pm. Closed Sunday.
Cost: Varies. Laptops, desktops, tablets, phones, cables, and modems are free. Larger items (TVs, monitors, printers, appliances) may have fees. Check their current pricing before you go.
What sets them apart
EchoTech (also called Echo Technology) is Auckland's largest dedicated e-waste recycler. They're a professional operation – not a community drop-off – so they handle bulk volumes, offer certified data destruction, and recycle virtually every type of electronic equipment.
They also have EnviroNZ partner drop-off points around Auckland, including one at 114 Patiki Road in Avondale (just up the road from Manny's). These partner sites have their own hours and pricing set by EnviroNZ, so check before visiting.
What they take
Pretty much everything electronic. Their products-we-recycle page lists a comprehensive range including:
- All computer equipment (including CRT monitors)
- All TV types (including CRT)
- Phones, tablets, and mobile devices
- Printers, scanners, copiers
- Whiteware and large appliances
- Batteries (all types)
- Data centre and server equipment
Best for: Anyone with CRT monitors or TVs (which other free options don't take), old tube-style televisions, bulk e-waste, or anyone who needs certified data destruction. Also good for people on the eastern side of the catchment who find Penrose more convenient than New Lynn.
What about EcoMatters?
EcoMatters Environment Trust has been a go-to for West Auckland recycling for years, and their website still lists e-waste on their recycling page ecomatters.org.nz/zero-waste/recycling/ as of July 2026. However, community reports from late 2025 indicated that their e-waste collection service was winding down.
The situation is a bit unclear – their website lists it, but the community chatter says it's stopped. If you're planning to use EcoMatters specifically for e-waste, we recommend calling ahead to confirm. In the meantime, the three options above are confirmed working as of July 2026.

Before you drop off
- Wipe your data. If you're recycling a computer, laptop, phone, or tablet, do a factory reset or use disk-wiping software first. Manny's doesn't offer certified data destruction – if that's important to you, EchoTech does.
- Remove batteries where possible. Some devices have removable batteries. These can go with the device (we take them), but loose lithium-ion batteries should be bagged separately.
- Don't worry about accessories. Cables, chargers, keyboards, and mice can all go together with the main device. No need to separate anything.
- Tape loose ends. If you're dropping off a bundle, tape cables to their devices so they stay together.
Why recycling e-waste matters
Electronic waste is the fastest-growing waste stream in the world. In New Zealand, about 98,000 tonnes of e-waste is generated each year, but only a fraction gets properly recycled. Most of it ends up in landfill, where heavy metals like lead, mercury, and cadmium leach into the soil and groundwater.
Beyond the environmental harm, it's a waste of valuable materials. A single tonne of mobile phones contains more gold than a tonne of gold ore. Recycling recovers those materials and puts them back into the supply chain.
Every laptop, phone, or old printer you drop off at a proper recycling point instead of dumping in your rubbish bin keeps toxic materials out of the ground and valuable resources in circulation. And in West Auckland, you can do it for free.
Common questions
Can I put e-waste in my kerbside recycling bin?
No. Auckland Council's kerbside recycling does not accept any electronic waste. Putting e-waste in your recycling bin contaminates the load and can cause problems at the sorting facility. It must go to a dedicated drop-off point.
Is e-waste recycling free in Auckland?
Sometimes. Manny's Recycling is always free. Go Recycle New Lynn is free for most electronics (no CRT TVs). EchoTech Penrose charges fees for larger items like monitors, TVs, and appliances but accepts laptops and small devices for free. Always check before you go if you're unsure.
Do I need to wipe my hard drive before recycling?
It's strongly recommended. While Go Recycle states they destroy data during the stripping process, and EchoTech offers certified destruction, the safest approach is to wipe your own device first. Manny's Recycling does not offer certified data destruction – please handle data-sensitive devices yourself before dropping them off.
What if I have a lot of e-waste – like a whole office cleanout?
For bulk e-waste, EchoTech Penrose is your best bet. They handle commercial volumes and can arrange collection for large amounts. Manny's Recycling is a community drop-off and handles household quantities – if you've got more than a car boot's worth, check with EchoTech about their bulk services.
Can I drop off e-waste at the transfer station?
Some transfer stations accept e-waste, but most charge fees. The EnviroNZ Patiki Road transfer station in Avondale (114 Patiki Road) accepts e-waste as an EchoTech partner site – but it charges fees set by EnviroNZ. Manny's Recycling is 3 minutes from Patiki Road and is always free.
